Secondary school brings new subjects, faster lessons and the national exams at the end of Sec 4. Many students who did well in PSLE find the jump harder than expected. The right secondary school tuition in Hougang helps students keep up in lower secondary, choose subjects wisely and prepare properly for their final exams. This guide covers what changes at each stage and how Learning Voyage supports secondary students in Maths and Science.
What Changes in Secondary School
- Abstract thinking. Maths moves from numbers to algebra, functions and proofs.
- Separate sciences. From Sec 3, students take Physics, Chemistry and Biology as Pure or Combined Science.
- More independence. Teachers expect students to manage revision on their own.
- Full Subject-Based Banding. Students take subjects at different levels (G1, G2, G3), which affects later options.
- The national exam. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), which replaces the O-Level and N-Level exams.
Lower Secondary (Sec 1 and Sec 2)
Lower secondary is where foundations are set. Weakness in algebra or basic science concepts here becomes a much bigger problem in Sec 3. Good tuition at this stage keeps students on track and makes subject choices at the end of Sec 2 easier.
We run Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths and Science classes several times a week. See our secondary maths tuition and secondary science tuition pages.
Upper Secondary Maths (Sec 3 and Sec 4)
- E Math tuition – core mathematics required for JC and polytechnic admission.
- A Math tuition – calculus, logarithms and trigonometry; important for students planning H2 Maths in JC.
Our O Level maths tuition guide explains how to decide between E Math and A Math support.
Upper Secondary Science (Sec 3 and Sec 4)
- Chemistry tuition – mole concept, chemical bonding, organic chemistry and practical skills.
- Physics tuition – forces, energy, electricity and waves, with lots of calculation practice.
For exam strategies, see our O Level science tuition guide.
Signs Your Teen Needs Secondary Tuition
- Grades drop after moving from Sec 2 to Sec 3.
- Your teen spends hours on homework but still feels lost.
- Test papers show the same type of mistake again and again.
- They avoid Maths or Science homework altogether.
- Exam anxiety is affecting confidence.
How We Teach Secondary Students
Every class uses our Plug-the-Gaps approach: identify the missing concepts, review and correct mistakes step by step, then reinforce through practice that builds up to exam-level questions. Classes are small, so tutors can check each student’s working and give feedback during the lesson.
